As we approach East Meets West 2017 in January we thought we’d put together this handy travel guide for attendees coming from Asia and the US.

FLIGHTS

The event is January 19-20 but we suggest coming in early on January 18 and staying for the weekend to enjoy some fun in the sun.

Since we’re clear of the holiday season prices have returned to lower-than-peak prices and we have some ideas from big West coast cities on United:

  • San Francisco: $225
  • Los Angeles: $250
  • Seattle: $238
  • Vancouver: $201

Hawaiian Air and Japan Airlines have some good deals flying in from Asia:

  • Shanghai: $1200
  • Tokyo – $650
  • Beijing – $1000

HOTELS

The Hilton Hawaiian Village is already sold out so you’ll be looking in the area.

We believe you can find a better deal in a Waikiki hotel than AirBNB (still have a look) as it’s more convenient getting to and from the venue.

You’re looking at around $200 – $350 per night for something decent around the area. Some of our picks for close to venue and are great hotels are:

  • The Modern Honolulu
  • The Ambassador Hotel
  • Aqua Palms Waikiki
Unless you like walking, don’t stay near the Honolulu Zoo – that is on the other side of Waikiki and is a 1-hour walk back to the Hilton.

Check out deals on:

OTHER TIPS

Its about a $40 taxi ride from airport to Waikiki or take the bus it takes 40 minutes and costs $2.50. The airport is close to Waikiki. There is no wifi in the airport. And no SIM card dispensers.

Hawaii has UberX and Lyft.

Hawaii does not have popular international banks! Very important! You will not find an HSBC or a Wells Fargo anywhere on Oahu. So either bring more cash or get ready to be hit by a $3 processing fee every time you use an ATM in Hawaii.

Saimin is the equivalent of instant noodles. You can get them everywhere – even McDonald’s.

Everyone in Hawaii is super polite and super nice – if you are coming from Asia this will be very suspicious, but do not be afraid of them – this is normal for Hawaii and enjoy it while you are here.

Poke is raw fish not raw Pokemon.
