Blue Startups welcomed Cohort 8 in late October and we want you to get to know them better as they reach the half-way point in the program readying for their demo day at East Meets West 2017 in January and in San Francisco the first week of February 2017.

Today please meet MOJO Yoga:

1. What is the secret origin of your startup and your team?
Jean Marie (CEO) and Scott (CVO) entered into this venture as a couple, after working together to completely transform their lives, starting with a little yoga every day. Their desire to share the tools of making meaningful personal change naturally extended first to their closest friends. Jen (COO) and then Bella (CBO) most enthusiastically embraced this same vision and have also dramatically improved their own lives in much the same way. We became a mastermind group for each other first, and eventually partners in MOJO Yoga with a mission to empower people to live the lives they love by nurturing the connections of mind, body, and spirit.

2. What problem(s) are you solving?
Yoga is all about connections: those of mind, body, and spirit and those of community and relationships. Yet, yoga teachers and students experience a huge gap in their connection with each other outside the fleeting, traditional setting of a studio class. Both yoga teachers and students want to develop their relationships with each other to grow in their practices, and an hour and a half every now and then in a studio just doesn’t cut it. Yoga teachers are left with scattered student bases and missed connections in the studio, plus disparate solutions online that are difficult to use, aggregate, and monetize.

3. What is your solution? (Your pitch)
MOJO Yoga bridges the gap between teachers and students with our web-based platform where yoga teachers can connect with their students anytime, anywhere, on any device by offering yoga videos on demand and personalized one-on-one coaching. More than that, MOJO is positioning itself to be the first one-stop shop for the yogapreneur, offering all the tools and resources a yoga teacher might need to continue their own education, connect with fellow teachers, and build their business skills, all while developing their current students and discovering new ones in one convenient platform.

4. What kind of traction do you have?
We have a wait list of over 160 teachers in our queue to onboard to the platform, and with our student users to date following their teachers onto the platform, we anticipate rapid traction upon the release of the second iteration of our MVP by the first of the coming year.

mojo-yoga-team-15. Where do you see MOJO Yoga in 24 months after you graduate Cohort 8?
In 24 months, we see MOJO Yoga operating on a scalable, custom platform with proprietary software that automates our teacher on-boarding and management process, a fully social community between teachers and students in-app, and a vibrant global culture learning in both recorded and live formats, empowering people through a holistic approach that includes our foundation of yoga and meditation, but has also expanded to include other health and wellness modalities, fitness, personal development, nutrition, and more.

6. What are your favorite growth hacks?
Affiliate marketing and social media campaigns. We work with affiliate marketing both within our business, making our teachers and ambassadors affiliates promoting membership, and with relevant partner products, especially on our podcast. We also have a lot of fun with social media campaigns to grow our audience, like yoga challenges, personality quizzes (i.e. “What’s your yoga spirit animal?”), polls to choose our newest clothing items to offer, and farting stick figure videos that explain our business (seriously, our most successful campaign to date by far). Those campaigns allow us to connect with and grow our audience in a fun and engaging way.

7. Who/What inspires you? (can be a founder, a person, a movement etc)
Yvon Chouinard and Patagonia’s business stewardship values; Elon Musk’s big-picture/forward thinking; Richard Branson and the global reach of the Virgin brand along with extensive and impactful charitable and small business/startup development programs; and people who toil away at little things every day to make their world happier, healthier, and wealthier.

8. What is one thing you’ve learned in the program so far that you found valuable/insightful/crazy?
To sum it up so far, we once were blind, but now we see.

9. One secret thing you’ve learned about Hawaii you would tell Cohort 9 about?
Well, we’re based in Maui, which is a beautiful secret in and of itself. But as far as O’ahu goes, we’d recommend making sure you take some time out to explore and enjoy other parts of the island outside of downtown Honolulu, especially the north shore.
