10 Questions with Cohort 8 – The Condo App

Blue Startups welcomed Cohort 8 in late October and we want you to get to know them better as they reach the half-way point in the program readying for their demo day at East Meets West 2017 in January and in San Francisco the first week of February 2017.
Today please meet The Condo App:
1. What is the secret origin of your startup and your team?
The founders of our team met at a foodie event, sparked up a conversation and realized they had a common passion for software. Living in condo buildings and saw first hand how old-fashioned and inefficiently property managers communicated. Hence the genesis of The Condo App.
2. What problem(s) are you solving?
Condo and apartment managers spend thousands of dollars a year on paper notices and hundreds of hours putting up with resident complaints related due to poor communication which wastes time and raises the cost of condo fees and rents.
3. What is your solution? (Your pitch)
Now, property managers can deliver thousands of notices in seconds directly to the smart phone of every resident saving thousands of dollars and countless hours dealing with angry tenants.
4. What kind of traction do you have?
We already have The Condo App in 30 buildings in Hawaii serving 5,000 residents.
5. Where do you see The Condo App in 24 months after you graduate Cohort 8?
In 24 months we see The Condo App being adopted as the gold standard for property managers across the globe. Running your property with the app will be imperative for most property managers. In short we plan to dominate the market!
6. What are your favorite growth hacks?
Our favourite growth hack was the decision to pivot from targeting individual properties to property management companies. This way we can subscribe hundreds of properties with the same effort it takes to subscribe one.
7. Who/What inspires you? (can be a founder, a person, a movement etc)
I am inspired by entreprenuers of all stripes. I love the creativity. The passion. The tenacity of a true entreprenuer. They inspire me because they are the ones effectively changing the world! One great idea at a time. It is contagious!
8. What is one thing you’ve learned in the program so far that you found valuable/insightful/crazy?
I found that the power of simple customer discovery goes a long way in improving your product and can quickly shift you from a paradigm of what you think your customer needs to what your customer really needs. I also learned that I can paddle board quite well and that my co-founder in the other hand can displace a heck of a lot of water!
9. One secret thing you’ve learned about Hawaii you would tell Cohort 9 about?
There are no snakes. There is no such thing as a private beach. Go to Pint + Jigger for good craft beers and spirits and the best Thai food is a toss up between Opal’s on the North Shore and Siam Square in Waikiki.
